Re po rt No. :

10 CFR 21-802 2.

Facility:

Crystal River Unit No. 3 3.

Re po rt Date:

August 7, 1980 4.

Notification Date:

August 6, 1980 5.

Circumstance:

Ge neral Ele c'tric Ve rsilube F-50 fluid was pro vided with Reactor Coolant Pump Hydraulic Shock Suppres-sors when they were procured.

6.

Vendor:

licDowell-Wellman Engineering Company (A Division 'of Anke r-Holth)

Port Huron, Michigan 7.

Discovered by: During a routine period ic Quality Program vendor evaluation of the General Electric Silicone Products Division, an FPC auditor noted that GE recommended t he use of alternative hydraulic fluid s (other than Versilube F-50) for use in radioactive environments.

8.

Co ndition:

FPC N9 clear Engineering contracted the Nuclear Engi-neering Department of Rensselaer Polytechnic Insti-tute, to pe rfo rm a study of the effects of ionizing radiation on GE Ve rsilube F-50 fluid, and make re-

' comme nd atio ns to FPC concerning any corrective ac-t io n deemed appropriate.

Rensselae r Polytechnic Institute concluded that, in no ca se, should the fluid be allowed to remain in the snubbers for ab-so rbed doses greate r than 10 Mrad s.

Samples of fluid in FPC snubbers slowed absorbed doses ranging from 2.3 to 3. 6 Mrad s.

9.

Corrective l

Actio n :

FPC will ab'ide by the, recommerdations of the RPI re-

.po rt to changeout the Versilube F-50 fluid prior to tiu time it cotild become a problem.
