July 24,1980 ST-HL-AE-499 SFN: V-0530 Mr. Karl Seyfrit Director, Region IV Nuclear Regulatory Commission 611 Ryan Plaza Drive, Suite 1000 Arlington, Texas 76102

Dear Mr. Seyfrit:

South Texas Project Units 1 & 2 Docket Nos. STN 50-498, STN 50-499 Interim Report on Lineal Indications In Previously Accepted Welds On June 25, 1980, pursuant to 10CFR50.55(e), Houston Lighting & Power notified your office of a potentially reportable deficiency involving results of reevaluations of piping welds previously found acceptable by nondestructive examination as performed by Brown & Root Quality Control. Liquid penetrant retest by Southwest Research determined that eight of these welds exhibited lineal indications in excess of code limitations. The welds are incorporated in the containment spray and safety injection systems.

Similar instances identified in the course of the reevaluation will be j

communicated to the NRC Resident Reactor Inspector as they occur. They will be handled on a generic basis, rather than item-by-item, as part of HL&P's response to the Order to Show Cause issued to HL&P on April 30, 1980.

If there are any questions, please contact Mr. S. S. Rodgers, at (713) 676-7953.

Very truly

,urs,

,./
