j DATE OF EVENT: March 4, 1978 [f

FACILITY: Davis-Besse Unit 1 IDENTIFICATION OF OCCURRENCE: Reactor Coolant System (RCS) unidentified leakage greater.than 1 GPM i

Conditions Prior to Occurrence: The unit was in Mode 1, with Power (MRT) = 2000, and Load (MUE) = 678.

Description of Occurrence: At 0230 hours0.00266 days
0.0639 hours
3.80291e-4 weeks
8.7515e-5 months
en March 4, 1978, unidentified Reactor I

Coolant System leakage was determined from Surveillance Test ST 5042.02, "RCS Water Inventory Balance", to be approximately 1.2 GPM.

This placed the unit in the Action Statement of Technical Specification 3.4.6.2 which requires unidentified leakage to be less than 1 GPM in Modes 1, 2, 3 and 4.

As per Action B of Technical Specification 3.4.6.2, the unit was shutdown to Mode 3 at 0740 hours0.00856 days
0.206 hours
0.00122 weeks
2.8157e-4 months
on March 4, 1978.

l 1

g'"N i

g j Designation of Apparent Cause of Occurrence:

Due to the transients the unit went

\\__,/

through which temporarily increased seal leakoff and the normal wear of the Reactor Coolant Pump seals, the seal leakoff increased to.96 GPM.

It is normal for the gap size of the seals to vary which changes the amount of seal leakoff.

t t

3 Analysis of Occurrence:

There was no danger to the health and safety of the public j

or to unit personnel.

The small leakages were processed through the normal contain-ment sump.

Corrective Action

The seal leakoff was measured by recording the time the leakoff filled a 400 ml cylinder. This was repeated four times for each pump.

The results for each pump seal were RCP l 0.07 GPM, RC? l 0.245 GPM, RCP 2 0.225 GPM, RCP 2 0.426 GPM.

At 2000 hours0.0231 days
0.556 hours
0.00331 weeks
7.61e-4 months
on March 4,1978, Reactor Coolant Pump seal leakoff was determined to be.96 GPM. This removed the unit from the Action Statement of Technical Specifica-tion 3.4.6.2.

Failure Data:

There have been no previous reportable occurrences of unidentified leakage caused by increased reactor coolant pump seal leakage.
