Docket No. 50 334 i
i MEMORANDUM FOR:
Horace K. Shaw, Mechanical Engineering Branch, NRR j
Donald S. Brinkman, Project Directorate I-1. NRR FROM:
Peter S. Tam, Senior Project Managei, Project E
Directorate I-4, NRR j
SUBJECT:
Beaver Valley Unit 1 -- Close Out of TAC 7240, Deficiency of Deep Draft Pump, IE Bulletin 79-15 The subject TAC 7240 was closed out in the early eighties, before I became project manager of Beaver Valley Power Station. Swever, j
6 recent memorandum from Walt Dutler (August 22, 1909) stated that additional information is needed from the licensee.
l l
As a result of that memorandum, I called Horace Shew and learned
'L from him that the only missing information from Beaver Valley 1 i
is documented on page C-2 of NUREG/CR-3049 (NRC Accession number j
3312050040), but the report was n6ver formally transmitted to the licensee. The report on page C-2 specifically stated that 1
"it is proposed that one of the two pumps be operated full flow l
t if possible, for a period of 48 to 72 hours8.333333e-4 days
0.02 hours
1.190476e-4 weeks
2.7396e-5 months
to establish long term o
durability" Contrary to the Butler memorandum, this is the 9.013 missing information.
i i
Accordingly, I verbally requested the licensee tu furnish any test information that will be responsive to the concern e.~oressed in 1
NUREG/CR-3049. By letter dated September 29, 1989 (NRCAccession j
the licensee stated that " extended operation number 8910110048 1
3 of the alternate irtake system did occur in August 1981... when the system was used to supply river water cooling for (60) sixty hours during dredging operations near the normal intake structure".
This information is fully renponsive to the concern in NUREG/
CR-3M9. I have consulted with Horace Shaw and with his agreement.
I now consider this licensing action fully closep j
