SSINS No.: 6835 UNITED STATES Accession No.:

NUCLEAR REGULATORY COMMISSION 8005050063 OFFICE OF INSPECTION AND ENFORCEMENT WASHINGTON, D.C.

20555 June 13, 1980 IE Information Notice No. 80-28 PROMPT REPORTING OF INFORMATION IN ACCORDANCE WITH 10 CFR 50.55(e)

The recently implemented expansion of the NRC Resident Inspection Program at nuclear power plants and fuel facilities, has led to some misunderstandings regarding the required reporting of information to the NRC.

In order to clarify this matter, the following is provided for your information.

Some licensees have been making the 24 hour2.777778e-4 days
0.00667 hours
3.968254e-5 weeks
9.132e-6 months
reports required by 10 CFR 50.55(e)(2) orally to NRC resident inspectors. This does not satisfy the intent of the regulation. Adherence by all licensees to the explicit requirements of the regulation provides for each Regional Office to be a single focal point for reporting, and minimizes the possibility of inadvertent oversight. While we continue to enlist your cooperation in fully informing our resident inspectors, where appropriate, or any other NRC inspector who may be at your facility at such a time, such informational exchanges do not satisfy the reporting requirements of 10 CFR 50.55(e)(2).

Your cooperation in assuring that the appropriate members of your staff are fully aware of this information will be appreciated.

No written response to this information notice is required.

If you require additional information regarding this matter contact the Director of the appropriate NRC Regional Office.
