Subject:

McGuire Nuclear Station, Units 1 and 2 Docket Nos. 50-369 and 50-370 Response to Generic Letter 88-20 and Supplement Dear Sir In response to GL88-20 and supplement. Duke Power Compary is providing herein the proposed program for completing the IPE for McGuire Nuclear i

Station.

In June 1984. Duke completed a Level 3 PRA, with external events, on McGuire Unit 1.

Subsequently, in 1988 Duke began a program to update this PRA to take into account a number of changes made to the plant since 1982, the original PRA baseline. For satisfying the IPE requirement. Duke intends to utilize the updated McGuire PRA, which is a Level 3 PRA with' analysis for external events.

The updated McGuire PRA was planned, managed, and carried out entirely with Duke personnel. This PRA takes in tu account the plant data and updated plant system configurations. The overall methodology is consistent with the PRA. Drocedures Guide, NUREG-2300. The human interaction assessment employed thu EPRI sponsored SHARP methodology. The in plant consequence analysis, consisting of accident progression is based on tbn MAAP computer code (MAAP 3.0B).

Finally, the CRAC2 computer code was utilized to perform the ex plant consequence analysis.

This PRA is in the final stage of refinement and a few additional tasks remain to be completed for the IPE applications. These tasks and their schedules as presently envisiened, considering the ongoing work on Oconee and Catawba PRAs, are as follows:

1.

Complete Consequence Analysis September 1990:

2.

Assess Unit 2 Differences September 1990:

3.

A-45 Evaluation and USI/GS1 Screening December 1990:

4.

Examination of Results May 1991 and, 5.

Submittal of IPE Package to NRC December 1991.

U.S. Nuclear Regul: tory Commission November 1, 1989 Page 2 Nearly all the information the NRC is seeking in the IPE submittal is contained in the completed McGuire PRA document.

Accordingly, our submittal package will include a copy of the updated PRA, a " road map" for the requested information within the PRA, a discussion of the evaluation of A-45 and other USIs/GSIs, a sunnery of Duke actions in response to the PRA results, and a discussion of conformance to GL88-20.

Since our IPE methodology is PRA methodology and since our PRA documents are nearly completed, restructuring the PRA reports in the order suggested by the IPE submittal guidance would require additional resources and paperwork and is not warranted. Our submittal package contains all the information the NRC is seeking.

We trust the NRC will find that our program, as outlined abovo, will satisfy the intent and spitit of the IPE Ictter.

Very truly yours, Ha B. Tucker SEL472 xc Mr. S. D. Ebneter Regional Administrator, RII U. S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission P.O. Box 2257 Atlanta, Georgia 30301 Mr. D. S. Hood Office of Nuclear Reactor Regulation U. S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Washington, D.C.
