I have received your letter of September 26, 1989, expressing Arizona Public Service Company ('s support for the evolutionary i
advanced light water reactors ALWR's) and recommending that.the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) maintain'its original design certification priorities for the ALWR's.
As we noted in the Statement of Considerations to our Federal Re ister Notice of J
April 18,~1989, concerning "Early STte7ermTtsi Yiandard Design Certifications; and Combined Licenses for Nuclear Power Plants,"
10 CFR Part 52, 54 Fed. Reg. 15372, 15375, the Commission will give priority to designs for which there is a demorstrated interest in the United States.
The Commist. ion will review other designs as
' resources permit.
We are currently establishing review priorities that will effectively utilize NRC resources.
During this process the Commission will carefully consider your comments.

Thank ydu for your letter dated September 20, 1989, expressing Arizona Public Service Company's support of the evolutionary advanced Ifght water reactor (ALWR) and recomending that the NRC maintain its origihal design certification priorities for the ALWRs.
As I stated during the briefing on the EPRI ALWR r6quirerents docunent on September 20, 1989, the Commission will give pr14rity to designs for which there is a demonstrated interest in the United / States. The Comission will review other designs as resources permit.
