Date Cn June 15, 1971, J. E. S=ith, Superintendent, Ocenee Nuclear Station, advised C. E. Murphy, Reacter Inspector, Regica II, by telephone that the analysis of test results indicated that several of the centrol rod drives may have been damaged during scra= tests. We folleving preliminary in-formation was given the inspecter during this telecon and a subsequent telecen on June 18, 1971.

Tc.e control rod drive scrs: times were =easured during functional testing of the =echanis=s and found to be tco fast.

Initial exa=ination of the =echanis=s indicated that the motor tubes were not ec=pletely filled with water. This indicated that the mecha-nisms may have been scra==ed dr/.

The four drives around the center drive vera stuck with the lead screv threads pess D ly telev the roller nut.

Subsequent investigatien shoved thst five drives had the tangs sheared off the torque taker tubes. Three other drives had bent tangs. These eight drives vill be replaced.
5 One drive has been removed frc= the head and vill be disasse= bled co=pletely.

The reactor head vill be re=oved and the vessel inspected and any missing pieces of the drive =echanis=s vill te located and re=oved.
