The information presented is as initially received without verification or evaluation and is basically all that is known by IE staff as of this date. FACILITY: Duke Power Company Oconee, Unit No. 3 Docket No. 50-287 Oconee County, South Carolina

SUBJECT:

REACTOR COOLANT SYSTEM LEAK A unit 3 shutdown commenced at 2:00 p.m. on March 6 due to a reactor coolant system leak of 7 gallons per minute (gpm). Technical Specifi-cation limit for identified leakage is 10 gpm. The leak is identified as a packing leak on an isolation valve for a primary flow sensor. The outage, initially planned for one day, has been extended to 7 days due to problems encountered in reducing airborne activity in the containment prior to entry. The licensee does not anticipate a problem in repairing leak. There has been media interest. A news release has been issued by the licensee; none is planned by HRC. The State of South Carolina has been informed. Region II (Atlanta) received notification of this occurrence by telephone from the Resident Inspector at 2:00 p.m. on March 6. This information is current as of 9:00 a.m. on March 8.
