SUBJECT:

Limerick Generating Station, Units 1 and 2 Docket Nos. 50-352 and 50-353 IE Bulletin No. 80-08 Examination of Containment Liner Penetration Welds FILE: GOVT 1-1 (IE Bulletin 80-08)

Dear Mr. Grier:

This is in complete response to IE Bulletin 80-08, forwarded to us on April 7,1980, concerning the examination of containment liner penetra-tion welds.

1. Fired heads which are ' et welded to containment penetration sleeves are used in Lia; rick Units 1 and 2 as illustrated in PSAR Fig. 5.2.5 (Attachment 1) . There will be one hundred thirteen (113) such penetrations per unit at Limerick.

Twenty-nine (29) of these penetrations on Unit I have been completed.

2a. The applicable code is AShE Section III, 1974 through Winter 1974 Addenda.

2b. Flued head to containment penetration sleeve butt welds have been radiographed. This is required per our Specification for Field Fabrication and Installation of Piping and Instrumentation for i Nuclear Service.

2c. All joints are open butt with a TIG root; backing bars are not I used. Pipe materials and sizes are listed in Table 1 (see  !

Attachment 2) .

2d. Of the 29 process piping penetrations which have been completed at Limerick, 9 of the flued head to penetration sleeve welds required repairs, the other 20 did not. Penetrations requiring repairs are outlined in Table 2 (see Attachment '2) .

3. Not applicable. 1 0 0 0 721:015$7

l Mr. Boyce H. Grier - (continued) Page 2  !

As stated in r sponse 2b., it is a requirement of our specification that all flued head to penetration sleeve butt welds be radiographed.

Our experience with the 29 completed penetrations has been that code acceptable radiographs are obtainable for these welds. The remainder of i the flued head to penetration sleeve butt welds on Unit 1 and all on ,

Unit 2 will be radiographed. '

We will be pleased to submit any other information that you may require on this matter.

Very truly yours,

,$EUh John S. Kemper Attachments:
