- .s Docket Nos. 50-325 and 50-324 Mr. J. A. Jones Senior Executive Vice President Carolina Power & Light Company 336 Fayetteville Street Raleigh, North Carolina 27602
Dear Mr. Jones:
The NRC staff has been directed by the Comission (Order CLI-80-21, May 23, 1980) to conduct tests on fire protection systems in operating power plants.
Accordingly, the NRC staff has selected the Intake Structure Besement Area (El
) at Brunswick 1/2 as a possible test suoject. We plan to conduct a test on a mock-up of a portion of the Intake Structure Basement Area at Brunswick 1/2 and accordingly, are interested in information necessa:'y to replicate a portion of this area. We request your cooperation and assistance in providing this information.
We would like to schedule a meeting at Brunswick 1/2 for the purpose of examining the Intake Structure Basement Area and reviewing records related i
to this area.
Our examination wbuld determine the specific portion of this
]
area which would be replicated. Our review of the reccrds would determine the specific records and information which we would ther request to be sent to us. As a minimum, our review would include the following:
1.
Cable tray and cable conduit layouts and details in the Intake Structure Basement Area.
2.
Cable specifications including relative mix and fill in trays and conduits.
3.
Locations of redundant safety cables.
4 Fire detection and suppression systems layouts and details.
5.
Ventilation within the Intake Structure Basement Area during operation.
It may be possible to make measurecents on air flow on site using our laboratory personnel during the visit.
We reouest that you have the above information available in a meeting rcam for ow visit so that we can mirimize the time required.
The purpose of the test is to confirm a power plant fire protection system designed to current NRC guidelines and approved by the NRC.
Accordingly, the test mock-up should be as close a replication of a portica of your 80071go $ $~$~
f
Mr. J. A. Jones July 8,1980 Intake Structure Basement Area as possible, including all fire protection measures.
We intend to conduct two tests using a simulated spill of two gallons of combustible liquid such as heptane confined to a ficor area of 25 ft2 below the exposed cable trays. The first test will use the fire suppression system as designed and installed in this area.
The second test will assume that the fire suppression system does not functics, and suppression will rely on the detection of the fire by normal means in your plant and the subsequent use of your fire brigade.
In order to make this test meaningful, we request that you conduct an unannounced fire drill simulating a fire in the Intake Structure Basement Area (El.
)
so that we can determir.e a suitable delay time for your fire brigade for a fire in this area.
We request that you inform our resident inspector prior to the test so that he can be present as an observer. Also, we request a copy of your report of the fire drill.
So that we can arrange a specific time for our visit, we request that you indicate your agreement to participate in this program as soon as possible.
Sincerely, s
