Since the fall of 1979, the Board of Commissioners has been following with great interest the proceeding concerning the potential movement of spent nuclear fuel assemblies by Duke Power Company fran the Oconee Nuclear Station to the F1cGuire Nuclear Static. The Board has never totally favored the movement of spent nuclear fuel through Gaston County.
However, the Board does realize that the movement of spent nuclear fuels is one of the evils in the use of nuclear energy to provide our electrical needs.
The major concern of the Board is for the safety and physical and mental I
welfare of the citizens which we, the Board, serves. Cue to the factors of sketching information, or in sane cases the void of infomation in specific areas; and the refusal of the primary route by the Nuclear Reg-ulatory Ccmission which was proposed by Duke Power Company, the Board unanimously opposes the shipment of spent nuclear fuel through Gastori County. Also, we must strongly oppose and protest the use of tne two alternate routes currently being proposed by Duke Power Company for the transport of the nuclear wastes.
These positions are outlined in greater detail in the accompanying position paper. The Board respectfully presents this paper to the Atcmic Safety and Licensing Board and requests that the points, as outlined, be given serious consideration in any decision of the Board and Nuclear Regulatory Comission.
