Dear Mr. Phillips:

In sur June 30, 1972 letter we requested (Item 4.37) information to indiente that an air particulate asetter would be inclui.ed in the Reactor Building leakage detention system for Arkansas Noelear One - Unit 1.

Your response in ht 27 to the PSAR, dated August 4, 1972, states that you do not plan to install a particulate leak detester since leak detectica by reestor building sump level change, primary inventory ba1==ne, and a gaseous leak deseetor are believed to be sufficiently diverse and redundant.

Ma-54, and Fe-59. The particulate leak detector is est required for raa - a l

of diversity or red;.ar.sy but for its greater sensitivity. Work on other

'i plaats of this type indicates about an order of magnitude greater sensitivity them saa be empeated from gaseous defectors.

Please amend your application to refleet the taalusion of an airborne particulate activity detestor.

Dear Mr. Phillipe:

R. Bernero Lice'nsing Asst.

In our June 30, 1972 letter we requested (Item 4.37) information to indicate that an air particulatg monitor would be included in the Resetor Building leakage detecti k systes'for Arkansas Nuclear one -

Unit 1.

Your response in A===d===t*17 td the FSAR, dated August 4, 1972, states that you do not plan to insta11 M particulate leak det-. tor since leak detection by reactor building sump / level change, primary inventory balance, and a gaseous leak detector are believed to be sufficiently diverse and redundant.

We will require that the leak detection system inefades an agrborne partipteactivitydetectorsensitjveintherange 10-ve/ce to 10' ve/cc for activated corrosi#n products such as

-60, co-58, Mu-56, Mu-54 and Fe-59. The partiediate leak detector is t requirmi forreasonsofdiversityorredandaheybutforitsgreatersensitivity.

Work on other plants of this type indicates that a 0.01 gym les can be q

detected within one hour and a k gym leak within one ninute. Gas detectors approach this sensitivitt only with relatively high pereer.

of failed fu&1.

ges Flease====A your appliestion to reflect the inclusion of an airborne particulate activity detector.

Sincerely, R. C. DeYoung Assistant Director for Pressurised Water Raaetors Directorate of Licensing ee Horace Jewell, Esq.
