During our meeting with your personnel on May 22, 1980, we discussed the Arkansas Nuclear One-Unit No.1 Reactor Coolant Pump Seal leak event of May 10, 1980. We indicated at that meeting that we would be transmitting a request for information relating to the event of May 10, 1980.
We request the information identified in the enclosure be sent to us within thirty (30) days after receipt of this letter.

Enclosure REQUEST FOR INFORMATION RELATED TO RCP SEAL LEAK EVENT OF MAY 10, 1980 AT ARKANSAS NUCLEAR ONE, UNIT N0. 1 DOCKET NO. 50-313 1.
Provide the failure analysis report and corrective action of the RCP seal which failed and other damage waich may have occurred during the event.
2.
Provide details concerning the pump and seal. including:
- a. - A detail drawing or illustration of sectional assembly of the RCP.
b.
Critical speed of pump.
c.
Date when the RCP rotor was balanced.
d.
RCP seal installation procedure.
e.
Criteria for in-plant maintenance program which triggers seal replacement (preventive).
Identify parameters which are included in this criteria.
3.
Provide the Byron Jackson seal reliability study for the Davis-Besse and Crystal River RCPs.
4.
Provide the technical bulletins which AP&L has received from Byron
~
Jackson concerning the RCP.
5.
ForeachRCPforAA0-1,identifyRCPsealparametersofinterstage pressure, inlet and outlet temperature, flow and leak rates, and vibration before and after the RCP seal failure event.
6.
Provide copy of strip and reactimeter charts for all recorded primary and secondary system parameters (P, T, levels, etc.'
aring the seal failure event of May 10, 1980.
7.
Provide a sequence of the event delineating equipment operation and a copy of the computer printout and operator log.
- 8. -Describe lift pump operation and its design basis, including when it starts and parameters.that initiate its operation. Describe the response of the thrust bearing and seals due to lift pump operation.
9.
Provide the analysis which supports the conclusion regarding the 40 minute interruption of seal coolant for Unit 2 RCPs.
- 10. Provide details of the analyses which calculates the time to seal damage without seal injection and immediate cooling rates for RCP in Unit 1.
11 Provide a tabulation of maintenance performed for RCP's seals for both units from the date of commercial operation to the present time if such information is available. For each pump, identify the date and reasons for the maintenance.
- 12. Describe the effect of loss of component cooling water to the thrust bearing oil.
Include the effect of the increased lube oil temperature on the axial movement of the pump shaft and its effect on the seals.
