Dear Mr. O'Reilly:
Our letter to you of August 2,1979 (GD-79-1974) referred to a letter we sent to Mr. T. A. Ippolito on July 23, 1979 (GD-79-1844) concerning the seismic analysis of supports for safety related piping.
These letters discussed the analytical techniques and criteria being utilized to reanalyze the pipe supports and documented that we had completed an "as built" to "r; analyzed" comparison as required by Bulletin 79-14.
When modifications were found to be necessary in the reanalysis effort they were categorized as either short or long term modifications.
The short term modifications were those where the supports could not be shown to maintain structural integrity, and all of these modifications were completed in 1979. Long term modifications were indicated whenever the reanalysis indicated that a support would be overstressed but that it would maintain its structura.1 integrity.
Because there was no loss of structural integrity on the long term modifications, no immediate adverse impact on the public health and safety was seen.
In our July 23, 1979 letter, CP&L committed to complete the long term modifications by the end of the 1980 refueling outage.,

Mr. James P. O'Reilly June 2, 1980 System demand forecasts for the late summer of 1980 make it necessary for CP&L to split the work origina11y' scheduled for the late spring refueling outage into two parts.
It is our current plan to have a short refueling outage at this time and to begin a more extensive maintenance and modification outage in mid-September. The brevity of the currently scheduled refueling outage makes it necessary for us to revise our completion commitment for the long term seismic support modifications on Unit 1.
The remaining Unit I long term modifications will be completed by the end of the maintenanc'e' outage scheduled to begin in mic-September of this year. This schedule change has been discussed with members of your staff. Since all of the existing sup-ports have been shown to maintain their structural integrity, there will be no adverse impact on the public health and safety due to this brief delay in the completion of the modifications.
