Dear Gordon:

As you recall, we net st your office with EPA on January 18, 1972, concerning EPA's comments on the Oconee Draf t Environmental Impact S tat ement. The purpose of this letter is to inforn you of the status of the major follow-up actions identified at the meeting.

In connection with the additional inforr.ation requested by EPA, members of the staff have met with representatives of EPA and the applicant to discuss obtaining additional information on thernal discharges. The applicant has agreed to provide the required infor-cation on an expedited basis. The staff has also initiated efforts, on an crpedited basis, to provide further information on biota to be affected.

With respect to the accident analysis rule, the public comment period has expired. The staff is reviewing the conmenta received and is developing a plan to expedite the quantitative refinement of the proposed rule.

In regard to transportation, work has been expedited on preparing a general analysis of the impact on the environrent ef transportation of radioactive fuel to and from nuclear pcuer plants. A draf t is scheduled to be completed by early March of 1"72.

Uc nlan to hold a topical seminar with several of the agencies following the preparation of this document. In addition, we have transmitted copies of the existing DOT and AEC regulations related to shipping and shippirg containers to EPA.

In addition to the natters discusned at the meeting, the staff has initiated a progran of topical technical meetings with certain of the Federal agencies where the staff's approach to technical matters within their area of expertise is presented and discussed. The seminar N'
