January 16, 1975 Mr. Norman C. Moseley, Director Directorate of Regulatory Operations U. S. Atomic Energy Commissicn Region II - Suite 818 230 Peach'.ree Street, Northwest Atlanta, Georgia 30303 Re: Oconee Nuclear Station Docket No. 50-269, -270, -287

Dear Mr. Moseley:

We have been informed by the Babcock and Wilcox Company that several of their customers have experienced some erosion of the high pressure injection pump recirculation orffices and letdown block orifices.

This was due to excessively high flow velocities causing cavitation in the latter stages of the orifices.

An investigation of the orifices at Oconee Nuclear Station has revealed seme erosion of these orifices; however, only the Unit 1 letdown orifice and the 1A high pressure injection pump recirculation orifice have experienced erosion which resulted in wall thinning. The letdown orifice was The recirculation orifice replaced with an orifice of a new design.

was replaced with one of the original design.

Orifices We hava informed B&W of the status of orifices at Oconee.

of a different design will be supplied by B&W to prevent recurrence" of similar problems.

In the interim, all high pressure injection orifices and letdown orifices will be radiographed during each refueling outage to ensure that the High Pressure Injection System integrity is maintained.

i Very truly yours, d.d.255 A. C. Thies ACT:vr
