p June 6, 1975 Mr. Norman C. Moseley, Director U. S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Suite 818 230 Peachtree Street, Northwest Atlanta, Georgia 30303 Re:

Oconee Nuclear Station Docket Nos. 504

-270, -287

Dear Mr. Moseley:

Oconee Nuclear Station Appendix B Technical Specification 1.2A specifies the maximum chemical concentration of vastes discharged to the Keowee River.

On May 29, 1975, the limit of 0.2 ppm boron concentration in the Keowee River was exceeded for a short period of time. The following in a description of the circumstances of this event and the corrective action taken to prevent recurrence.

On May 29, 1975, a sample request form was submitted to Health Physics for sampling and subsequent release rate recotmnendations.

A release rate waa calculated based upon the activity of the sample and from 1959 L

to 2040 hours0.0236 days
0.567 hours
0.00337 weeks
7.7622e-4 months
a release at the rate of 50 gallons / minute was conducted.

i4 Ilad the release been calculated based upon boron concentration, the h

release rate would have been 24 gpm.

This resulted in a release concentration at the Keowee River of 0.32 ppa.

1 In order to prevent future recurrence, Health Physics personnel are now required to list, on the sample request foru, a release rate for each parameter for which analysis was performed.i -

The recommended re3 case rate on the sample request form shall be the lowest of those listed.

In addition, the Shift Supervisor signing the liquid waste release form and authorizing the release will ascertain that the release rate is within limits for the parameter values listed.

g Very truly yours, n
