WATER HAf0ER EVEflTS Enclosed is a brief description of water hadiner events that have occurrad since June 8, 1979. No attempt has been made to differentiate these events with respect to licensee, type of water hamer, systems effected, consequences or any other parameter. We will continue to monitor these l
events in this manner and periodically classify them in the format given in table 3.2 in NUREG-0582 (copy attached).
If a steam generator water hammer occurs in the future, we will myiew l
the event in detail and determine whether additional correctim measures are needed.

ENCLOSURE WATER HAMMER EVENTS REPORTED SINCE SEPTEMBER 1978 PLANT EVENT DATE REPORTED REMARKS Zion 1 9/14/78 Ltr to R-III 12/11/78; Steam Generator Water Hammer LER 50-295/78-95 occurred 12 min. after reactor trip resulting in no damage but false AP causing Safety Injection.

Some valves failed to close.
Safety injection occurred.
Sol e-noid valve replaced, valve operator repaired.
Robinson 2 5/8/79 Ltr to R-il 5/22/79; On the cold leg SI line, six of 10 LER 50-261/79-12.
supports on 130' pipe run failed.
Replaced with stronger supports.
San Onofre 1 5/14/79 Ltr 7/3/79 to D.L.
F.W. flow was interrupted after Ziemann; ltr 7/3/79 unit trip because FW valve went to to R-V; LER 50-206/
full closed instead of 5% open as 79-9 intended.
Reg. valve control circuit was reset. One snubber was damaged (sheared lock nut).
It was repaired.
Zion 1 6/8/79 Ltr to R-III 7/30/79; Steam generator water hammer and LER 50-295/79-44 dtd manual safety injection signal (60 7/30/79 sec).
Steam generator ID low level and feed flow mismatch due to feedpump trip.
Rancho Seco Ltr to V. Stello dtd When F.W. cleanup was reduced, the 7/27/79, re Feedwater FW line downstream of control valve Piping was subjected to condenser vacuum.
Cleanup line was moved upstream of Reg. valve.

Repaired and ECCS Jockey Pump system installed.
Brunswick 1 12/12/79 LER 50-325/79-107 Safety-Relief Valve operation with a water slug damaged valve and exhaust header.
La Salle 1/25/80 PNO III-80-19 Accidental closing of a valve in the cooling lake blowdown line caused a rupture 16x40 feet.
Browns Ferry 2 R-II Daily Report Cracks found in the bearing 2/21/80 support pedestals of the HPCI turbine were probably caused by water slugs in the HPCI steam supply line.,
