Gentlemen:

This letter forwards,in part, AP&L's response to I&E Bulletin 79-018.

As requested in reference 1, enclosed are completed responses to action items 1, 2 and 3 for the in-containment portion of three systems for ANO-Units 1 and 2.

The three completed systems for each unit are:

Unit No.1 1.

Makeup and Purification System 2.

Reactor Coolant System 3.

Reactor Building Spray System Unit No. 2 1.

Safety Injection System 2.

Chemical and Volume Control System 3.

Containment Spray System I

AP&L's projected schedule for completing action items 1, 2 and 3 for the remaining systems (approximately 15 per unit) and completing action items 4 and 5 for all these systems (both units) is specified in AP&L letter, reference 2.

As noted in reference 2, we anticipate completing action items 1, 2 and 3 for all systems (both units) by March 31, 1980.

Your letter, reference 1, requested the enclosed information to facilitate completion of the NRC's evaluation of the adequacy of environmental quali-fication of class IE electrical equipment.

Reference 1 forwarded I&E Bulletin 79-01B which included specific guidelines, instructions, and format for pre-paring and presenting the information.

To meet your requests, the following information is being provided (or will be where so noted) for each unit:

1.

A master system list of all Engineered Safety Feature systems required to function under_ postulated accident conditions, where accident con-ditions are defined as the LOCA or HELB inside containment and the HELB outside containment.

Preliminary lists are provided in enclosure 1, part 1 for Unit 1 and enclosure 2 part 1 for Unit 2.

A list of all class IE electrical equipment items (by identification number and generic name) for each system included in the master system list, which are required to function under accident conditions.

This information is presented in accordance with the format on pages 1 and 2 of enclosure 2 to reference 1, and is provided in enclosure 1, parts 2 and 3 for Unit 1 and enclosure 2, parts 2 and 3 for Unit 2.

Written evidence of environmental qualification is referenced for each class IE electrical equipment item identified in item 2 above, that sup-ports the capability of each item to function under postulated conditions.

This information is presented in accordance with the format shown on en-closure 3 to reference 1, and is provided in enclosure 1, part 4 for Unit 1 and enclosure 2 part 4 for Unit 2.

The additional information requested on the " instruction" sheet, en-closure 3 of reference 1 has been incorporated in our submittal except for the following information items which will not be provided at this time, but will be provided, if available, in our March 28 submittal:

Location of components by building, floor elevation, and above or below flood level elevation.

Instrument accuracy; specified and demonstrated actual.

Time period that a component is required to function, including references to documentation of time period and basis.

(This has been completed in part).

Outstanding items identifying parameters for which no qualification data is presently available, and AP&L's plans and schedule for de-termining the qualification of those parameters not presently sup-ported with adequate data. -Blank spaces on the enclosed data. sheets indicate missing data at this time.

~ Mr. K. V. Seyfrit February 28, 1980 To clarify the intent and scope of the I&E Bulletin, a meeting was held by the NRC, Region-IV on February 8, 1980.

During the meeting, several major points of direction were discussed, which were to be formally issued by letter to all_ licensees.

As of this date, no latter has been received by AP&L.

AP&L is continuing its efforts to respond to IE Bulletin 79-01B in a timely manner.
