Vice Pres 4ent Engineering and Construction February 11, 1980 Mr. Boyce H. Grier, Director U. S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Office of Inspection and Enforcement Region 1 631 Park Avenue King of Prussia, Pennsylvania 19406
Dear Mr. Grier:
SURFACE INDICATION - RPV NO. 2 .
10CFR50.55(e), " POTENTIAL SIGNIFICANT DEFICIENCY" NO. 2 UNIT HOPE CREEK GENERATING STATION On December 13, 1979, a verbal report was made to Region 1, Office of Inspection and Enforcement representative, Mr. R. McGaugby, advising of a potential significant item regarding a surface indication on Reactor Pressure Vessel No. 2. Supplemental information was issued on January 21, to your office pursuant to our initial report and in accordance with tne requirements of 10CFR50.55(e).
The supplemental information described the surface indication found on the Unit 2 RPV as approximately one inch in diameter.
The indication has several porous cavities, approximately 1/64" -
1/32" deep and four small linear indications. General Electric issued a Field Deviation Disposition Report (FDDR) to investigate the indication by grinding, in .020 inch increments, with PT examination between each increment until indication is removed.
General Electric will issue another FDDR should any repair be required.

e 4 Mr. Boyce H. Grier 2/11/80 General Electric has scheduled the examination by grinding rework to commence on February 15, 1980 and is to be completed by February 28, 1980. In the event further rework is required a definitive report shall be submitted to you. The expected date at which time documentation of the investigation will be available at the site is March 14, 1980.
If you require additional information, we will be pleased to discuss it with you.
