l MEliORANDUM FOR:

Uranium Fuel Licensing Branch, Division of Fuel i

Cycle and Material Safety, NMSS l

FROM:

H. W. Crocker, Chief, FFP Section, FF&MS Branch

SUBJECT:

REGION I ACTION REGARDING TERMINATION OF SPECIAL NUCLEAR MATERIAL LICENSE N0. SNM-65 j

According to our records, Region I verified during Inspection No.

70-82/74-02, which was conducted on July 31 and August 1,1974, that Nuclear Metals, Inc., holder of License No. SNM-65, had a zero inventory of highly enriched uranium.

Our records further show that James R. Miller, Chief of Fuel Fabrica-tion and Reprocessing Branch No. 2, Directorate of Licensing, informed the licensee in a letter dated September 30, 1974, of the conditions to be met for release of the facility used under License No. SNM-65 for unrestricted use. As a result of this letter, the licensee supplied a survey report of radiation readings taken after facility cleanup in a letter to Mr. Miller dated November 25, 1974. Region I did not attempt to confirm the survey, since the facilities, such as the ventilation system, used for work authorized by License No. SNM-65 were also used for work authorized by License No. SMB-179. The licensee is still performing work authorized by SMB-179.

Should you have further questions concerning this subject, we would be pleased to discuss them with you.
