k.,..../

FEB 151980 DOCKET NO.:

70-82 LICENSEE:

Nuclear Metals, Inc. (NMI)

FACILITY:

West Concord, Massachusetts

SUBJECT:

TERMINATION OF SPECI AL NUCLEAR MATERI AL LICENSE N0. SNM-65

===.

Background===

Nuclear Metals, Inc. ceased using special nuclear materials in 1974 and at that time requested that their license SNM-65 be terminated. The purpose of this memorandum is to formally document the actions which have been taken by NRC, including I&E, Region I, and NMI, so that the docket file may be retired.

Discussion By TWX dated April 8,1974, and letter dated July 24, 1974, NMI requested that SNM-65 be tenninated. NMI was advised by our letter dated September 30, 1974, of the decontamination guidelines to be met prior to releasing equipment and facilities for unrestricted use. By letter dated November 25, 1974, NMI submitted a tabular report showing radiation readings taken after facility cleanup.

The readings were below the guidelines.

In addition, NMI submitted a Certificate of Disposition of Materials signed by NMI on December 10, 1974, stating that all materials procured and/or possessed under the license had been either transferred to Argonne National Laboratory, sent to a licensed low-level waste burial facility, or been otherwise released in compliance with 10 CFR Part 20.

It is noted that NMI continues to perform work under Source Material License No. SMB-179. The comments of Region I, I&E, regarding the NMI activities are contained in the attached memorandum dated December 3,1979.

Recommendation On the basis of the above I note that the license has terminated and recommend the docket be retired.
