AEC Docket No. 50-312 7 4 ga Sc. Lags r Tv. '.

Dear Mr. Gianh.usso:

l'Ja-The Sacramento Municipal Utility District hereby transmits i

ten (10) copies of the report entNled " Rancho Seco Nuclear Service Spray Ponds Performance Evaluation" fot your information.

The District has previously advised your staff that this performance test would be conducted to verify design assumptions used in the evaluation of the spray ppnds. The results of the tests performed demonstrate the spray pond inventory is sufficient to comply with Regulatory Guide No.1.27, '" Ultimate Heat Sink," providing in excess of 30 days capacity.

This is true even when assuming unrealistically conservative meteorological conditions imposed by the AEC ctaff.

The District would also like to point out that although the enclosed report assumes cyclic spray operation for pond temperatures from 90*F to 95'F, we have the capability of operating the pond temperature up to 120*F which would reduce the water losses significantly.

This-report adequately supports the design of the existing system and further analysis is not required. However, the results of additional R&D being performed as discussed in the report will be made available to the AEC upon request.

Sin rely yours, o
