FACT SU:'."ARY CRYSTAL RIVER, U? LIT 3 L

LO'J STREi!GTH C0tl CRETE

1.. Concrete ' design strength was to be 5000 psi at 23 days.

2.

Concrete placement L-9. in the doce consisting of 129 cubic yards was comp 1eted 4/4/74.

3.

Low 7-day strengths were found based on previous data which l

' indicated that 28-day strength would not be met.

4.

Low 14-day strength were also found.

5..

The 28-day strength average was 4570 psi.

6.

The SAR (p. 5-14) required a set of test cylinders was to l

contain-2 tur testing at 7-days, 2 at 23-days and 2 at 90-days, however the 90-day cylinders were apparently used in attempting to raise the average when it was apparent the 7-day strength was low.

7.

Cause was found to be that ce. Tent did not meet specifications, apparently due to the grind not being fine enough.

8.

Concrete cores were then taken feca the dome e m of the L-9 j

placement.

9.

The 90-days cores ranged frca 5783 to 5520 psi,.-; ell chove the F

5000 psi minimum. The low rate of strength gain is in all 1

probability related directly to the larger than pecified

[ particle size, reducing the surface area availabTe for bydration.

This would then lengtcen the time for the concrece to achieve

[

its design strength.
