The NRC staff continuallyireviews;expe..rience-frem operatint, re' actors to.
assure that an adequata: level of safety:1s maintained at each individual; nuclear plant and forf the total population 'of nuclear plants. - As new technical infomation and operating experfonce becmes availablo, the.
N _ ;
~
HP.C evaluates whether such infomation ceuld significantly alter. the previously detemined levels.of. safety. ;In this regaro, we have noted that there have been.about 50 reported water.hanner events in. light water" reactars some of, which resulted incstructural; damage.tv safety significant -
syster.s. Of theseg.approximately 20 water haneers have occurred due to the rapid condensation of. steam in feedwater lines in plants with Westinghouse and Cocibustion Engineering -designed steam generators. thile;for the most part dastage from-these ' events has been limited to piping supports, one -
event in the feedwater line.'of a pressurized water reactor aid result ins,
a significant piping failure. None of the events to date has resulted in-an adverse impact on the health and safety.of the public. It is possible, however, that water hanners could lead to more severe consequences; although it would be expected that the probabilityk~of. such events is very low.
