Docket Nos. 50-269, -270, -287
Dear Mr. Case:
Your letter dated May 20, 1977 outlined a threefold program which was considered appropriate for Duke Power Company to evaluate the potential seismic activity at the Jocassee Dam.
The parts of tnis program were:
(1) a short-term report, (2) a monitoring program, and (3) a longer-term report that sill describe the findings of the monitoring program.
1 The short-term report is in preparation and will be submitted in the near future incorporating those items identified in the letter and c.s discussed with members of your staff on June 22, 1977.
In a letter dated October 24, 1976, Duke Power Company committed to re-instutute the seismic monitoring program which had been in effect from Novembur, 1975 to June 30, 1976. This program was initiated on November 1, 1976 and has provided four to six portable micro-earthquake recorders until June 8, 1977. As previously discussed with members of your staff, one permanent station and two portable instruments have been in operation since June 8, 1977. Beginning approximately July 15, 1977 it is our in-tension to maintain either the one permanent station and four portable instruments in operation or to provide a total of three permanent Stations until December 1, 1978.
By letter dated March 22, 1977 information on the monitoring program through February, 1977 was provided. Quarterly reports will be provided within 45 days of the completion of the quarter for future data. Prompt telephone reporting of any unusual seismic activity will be made. A long-term summary report will be submitted which will discuss the results of the monitoring program through November, 1978, however, it is expected that this report will be submitted by February 15, 1979 rather than your regimsted date of January 1, 1979.

- Dircctor Page Two July 8, 1977 This letter constitutes Duke Power Company's comnitment to complete the programs outlined in this letter. We believe this is responsive to NRC requests for information. It is our view that the additional commitments in this letter are no different that others made with regard to providing information to the Commission. An amendment to the Facility Operating License is not considered necessary in this tegard. The program which began at Duke Power Company's initiative in November, 1975 and 5s to con-tinue to November, 1978 will not be enhenced by the issuance of an amend-ment to the Facility Operating License.
Very truly yours,,q
