SUBJECT:
SEPTEMBER 25, 1979 INCIDENT AT NORTH ANNA UNIT 1 On September 25, 1979, the North Anna Unit 1 plant, which uses a Westinghouse-designed nuclear steam supply system, experienced a turbine trip followed by a reactor trip.
Subsequent events which followed led to a release of radio-activity to the auxiliary building. Our preliminary investigation of this incident indicates that it may have generic implications for Westinghouse-designed operating plants.
Enclosed is a copy of the staff's September 28, 1979 letter to the North Anna Unit 1 licensee req'uesting additional informa-tion concerning the September 25, 1979 incident. This copy is provided for your information and use.
We request that the Owners' Group u nsider the concerns identified in the enclosure to the September 28, 1979 letter in the preparation of the generic guidelines for emergency operational procedures.
