Dear Mr. Parker:
\\.
SUBJECT:
CLASS IENEQUIPMENT QUALIFICATION (McGuir.e Nuclear Station, Units 1 and 2)
By letter dated February 15, 1980 we notified you of a change in review pro-However, prior to this cedures for equipment qualification documentation.
notification, we initiated a review of two test reports (J0Y Manufacturing Company Test Reports FF-14282 and X-604) dealing with the hydrogen skimmer and containment air return fan motors. Based on this review we developed the following concern:
Radiation testing of the fan / motor unit was not incorporated into the The test report test sequence as part of the qualification program.
states that irradiation of the fan / motor unit is not technically feasible for an assembly of this size but did mention that motorette testing was performed. An informal submittal of the motorette testing From this data, the insulating system was provided by the applicant.
and other components appear to survive radiation exposures applicable to the McGuire Nuclear Station. This information does not, however, indicate that the motorette testing included exposure to a steam environment subsequent to its exposure to radiation. Further, no basis is provided to justify separate effects testing for the quali-fication of this equipment. This subject is addressed in NUREG-0588, Section 2.3(1) and (4).
We informed your staff of this concern through subsequent telephone discussions, 1
however, this matter has not yet been resolved. We request that this concern be included'in your response to our letter of February 15, 1980 requesting review of the McGuire equipment qualification program using the guidelines of NUREC-0588, " Interim Staff Position on Environmental Qualification of Safety-Related Electrical Equipment."
