PRELIMINARY NOTIFICATION June 11, 1979 PRELIMINARY NOTIFICATION OF EVENT OR UNUSUAL OCCURRENCE--PNO-79-145 This preliminary notification constitutes EARLY notice of event of POSSIBLE safety or public interest significance.
The information presented is as initially received without verification or evaluation and is basically all that is known by IE staff on this date.

SUBJECT:
REACTOR TRIP DUE TO LOSS OF MAIN FEED PUMPS At 3:30 a.m.
on June 11 the reactor tripped from 99 percent power due to the loss of all main feedwater pumps. This event was initiated by an electronic failure on a main turbine intercept valve control card.
This resulted in an upset in the turbine extraction steam cycle.
Extraction steam supplying the main feed pumps was lost, tripping the feed pumps.
The anticipatory reactor trip circuitry functioned as designed, tripping the reactor.
All three auxiliary feed pumps started and steam generator level was controlled correctly.
All systems installed as a result of the Three Mile Island 2 incident functioned as designed.
RC System pressure peaked at about 2275 psig and dipped to about 1850 psig during the transient.
Unit restart is expected the afternoon of June 11.
Media interest is not anticipated. The licensee plans to issue a news release.
The State of South Carolina has been informed.
Region II (Atlanta) received notification of this occurrence by telephone from the Resident Inspector at 8:30 a.m. on June 11.
