PRELIMINARY NOTIFICATION August 6, 1979 PRELIMINARY NOTIFICATION OF-EVENT OR UNUSUAL OCCURRENCE -- PNO-79-306 This preliminary notification constitutes EARLY notice of an event of POSSIBLE safety or oublic interest significance.
The information presented is as initially received without verification or evaluation and is basically all that is known by lE staff as of this date FACILITY:
Duke Power Company Oconee, Unit No. 1 Docket No. 50-269 Seneca, South Carolina
SUBJECT:
REACTOR TRIP ON LOSS OF FEEDWATER PRESSURE SIGNAL The reactor tripped from 40 percent power at 7:30 a.m. on August 6 due to the loss of a feedwater pressure signal from a main feedwater pump (MFP).
The trip occurred when the A MFP was placed into service with the pressure switch incor-rectly valved out.
Feedwater was not interrupted to the steam generators.
The emergency feedwater pumps we're not required and did not start since they receive a feedwater pressure signal from a different pressure switch.
The licensee is investigating the reason why the A feedwater pump pressure switch was not in service.
Unit recovery is in progress.
Media interest is not expected.
Neither the licensee nor the NRC plans to issue a news release.
The State of South Carolina has been informed.
Regional II (Atlanta) received notification of this occurrence by telephone from the inspector onsite at 10:30 a.m. on August 6.
