Office of Inspector and Auditor SUBJECT-UNAUTHORIZED DISCLOSURES OF SENSITIVE INFORMATION This is in response to your July 30, 1985, mmorandum requesting infomation on the numter of incidents and the corresponding sanctions imposed for unauthorized dichures of protected information by U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Comission (NRC) employees and special Government employees for the period January 19, 1975, to the present.

The Office of Inspector and Auditor (01A) has identified from its files 10 unauthcrized disclosures of protected infomation by NRC employees. Two of these disclosures involved classified information. Please note that the Division of Security has included these disclosures in their tally. The remair.ing unauthorized disclosures we have identified involve sensitive infornation (three instances), inf ormation subject to the Privacy Act (one instance \\, draf t reports (three instances), and proprietary infomation (one instance).

In the instance of the unauthorized disclosure of information subject to the Privacy Act, two employees were given letters cf reprimand for their actions in that regard.

Where the person (s) responsible for unauthorized disclosures in the other instances were known, no sanctions were imposed. Moreover, these instances did not involve knowing or willful disclosures and counseling of some of the employees concerned was sufficient.
