ASME CODE CASES FOR THE PERKINS NUCLEAR STATION, UNITS 1, 2 AND 3 AND CHER0KEE NUCLEAR STATION, UNITS 1, 2 AND 3.
DOCKET NOS. STN 50-488/493 The Nuclear Regulatory Comission staff has completed its review of the request in your letter of February 15, 1979, for authorization to use ASME Code Cases 1332-6,1361-2,1557,1587,1644-5,1661,1698,1713,1731 and 1820 in the construction of components for the Perkins Nuclear Station, Units 1, 2 and 3 and Cherokee Nuclear Station, Units 1, 2 and 3, Docket Nos. STN 50-488/493.
The reasons for approving the use of these codes and limitations on their use is as follows:
The following code cases have been approved by the Commission for general use and are included in Revision 15 of Regulatory Guide 1.85, dated May, 1979 (current issue).
Code Case Title 1332-6(N-1)
Requirements for Steel Forgings,Section III and VIII, Division 2 1820(N-177)
Alternate Ultrasonic Examination Technique,Section III, Division 1 Code Case 1361-2, dated March 9,1972, " Socket Welds,Section III," is included in Revision 15 of Regulatory Guide 1.84,.nd is conditionally approved by the Comission for general use as defined in the guide.
The code case was annulled by the ASME on March 1, 1979, and should not be used in the construction of components ordered on or after that date.
Code Case 1557, dated December 18, 1972, " Steel Products Refined by Secondary Melting," is an earlier revision of Code Case 1537-2 wnicn is 8 0 02 280bCfg

Code Case 1587, dated August 13,1973, "SA-508 Class 3 Forgings with 0.4/1.0 Ni for Section III and VIII, Division 2 Construction," was approved by the Comission for general use in Revision 0 of Regulatory Guide 1.85 and deleted from the list of acceptable code cases in Revision 12 of the guide. The code case was annulled December 31, 1975, as the provisions of the code case were incorporated in Section II, Part A, in the Summer 1975 Addenda to the code.
The code case may be used in the construction of components during the period it was in effect and approved by the Commission.
Code Case 1644-5, dated August 13,1976, " Additional Materials for Component Supports and Alternate Design Requirements for Bolted Joints,Section III, Division 1. Subsection NF, Class 1, 2, 3, and MC Components," was condition-ally approved by the Commission for general use as defined in Revision 9 of Regulatory Guide 1.85 and deleted from the list of acceptable code cases in Revision 11 of the guide. Revision 5 was annulled March 3,1977, as it was superseded by Revision 6, and should not be used in the construction of components ordered on or after that date.
Code Case 1661(N-78), dated November 4,1974, "Postweld Heat Treatment for P-No.1 Materials for Section III, Class 1 Vessels," was approved by the Commission for general use in Revision 2 of Regulatory Guide 1.84 and deleted from the list of acceptable code cases in Revision 13 of the guide. The code case was annulled January 1,1978, as the provisions of the code case were incorporated in the 1977 Edition of the code. The code case may be used in the construction of components during the period it was in effect and approved by the Comission.
Code Case 1698(N-92), dated June 30,1975, " Waiver of Ultrasonic Transfer Method,Section III, V, and VIII, Division 1," was conditionally approved by the Comission for general use as defined in Revision 14 of Regulatory Guide 1.85.
The code case may be used in the construction of components subject to the additional conditions specified in the guide.
Code Case 1713, dated August 11, 1975, "Small Material Items,Section III, Division 1, Class 1, 2, 3, CS, and MC," was approved by the Comission for general use in Revision 5 of Regulatory Guide 1.85 and deleted from the list of acceptable code cases in Revision 9 of the guide. The code case was annulled December 31, 1975, as the provisions of the code case was incorpo-rated in the Winter 1975 Addenda to the code. The code case may be used in the construction of components during the period it was in effect and approved by the Comission.
L. C. Dail FEB 141950 Code Case 1731(N-113), dated November 3,1975, " Basic Calibration Blocks for Ultrasonic Examination of Welds 10" to 14" Thick,Section XI, Division 1," is an acceptable code case and may be used in the inservice inspection program for the >eactor vessel.
