Subject:

Crystal River Unit 3 Docket No. 50-302 Operating License No. DPR-72

Dear Mr. Reid:

Your letter of December 17, 1979, requested Florida Power Corporation to suomit additional information concerning our proposed modification to provide autcmatic RC pump trip during a small break LOCA.

Specifically, you requested that w provide a schedule for re-sponding to Items 1 through 3 of your letter, includi ng a schedule for the installation of this equipment. You indicat-ed that this information is necessary to resolve your staff's concerns regarding the relationsnip of RCP current / power ver-sus void fraction and the proposed B&W setpoint of 20% de-crease in RCP current.

In our January 24, 1980, letter to you, we stated that, based on preliminary estimates from 88W regarding the magnitude of this effort and the long time span for its accomplishment, it appeared that our original design concept may no longer be a viable solution.

This letter is to inform you that Florida Power Corporation will require additional time to complete our evaluation of the B&W alternatives and schedule, as well as the other alterna-tives that may provide for a nore timely installment of auto-matic RC pump trip during a small break LOCA.

We will provide you with our proposed nethod and schedule for resolving this item as soon as possible.

Very truly yours, FLORIDA POWER CORPORATION yd
