Subject:
Crystal Rive r Unit No. 3 Docket No. 50-302 Operating License No. DPR-72
Dear Mr. Reid:
Your letter of December 17, 1979 requested Florida Power Corporation to submit additional information concerning our proposed modification to provide automatic RC pump trip during a small break LOCA.
Specitically, you requested that we provide a schedule for responding to Items 1 through 3 of your letter, including a schedule for the installation of this equipment.
You indicated that this information is necessary to resolve your staff's concerns regarding the relationship of RCP current /
power versus void fraction and the proposed B&W setpoint of 20% decrease in RCP current.
Since receiving your le t t e r, we have bee n in contact with B&W to determine the analysis program necessary to resolve your staff's concerns.
Based on a preliminary estimate from B&W, regarding the magnitude of this effort and the long time span for its accottplishment, it appears that our original design concept may tio longer be a viable solution.
This letter is to inform you that FPC is presently conducting discussions with B&W and other utilities that have gene ra t irg units with B&W NSSS alt'rnative designs.
These discussions involve other program optiens or e
solutions which will permit the installation of automatic reactor coolant pump trip during a small break LOCA.
