KING OF PRUS$1 A PENNSYLVANIA 19406 JAN 18 1980 Docket No. 50-220 Niagara Mohawk Power Corporation ATTN: Mr. R. R. Schneider Vice President Electric Operations 300 Eric Boulevard West Syracuse, New York 13202 Gentlemen:

This refers to the letter dated December 7, 1979 from Victor Stello, Jr., Director, Office of Inspection and Enforcement to Mr. R. R. Schneider regarding the recently amended NRC regulations requiring, in part, that licensees provide office space as part of the Resident Inspection Program. As a result of President Carter's actions in response to the reconinendations of the President's Commission on the Accident at Three Mile Island, the NRC plans to accelerate implementation of the Resident Inspection Program.

Consequently, it is necessary to request an earlier response from you with regard to your plans for providing the office space for the resident NRC staff.

It is now expected that the 1 :rst resident will assume his new duty station at your facility by April 30, 1980.

It is planned that all resident inspectors s

will be onsite by June 7, 1980. As a result of this change in schedule, you are requested to inform this office in writing by January 31, 1980 of your plans to accomodate the resident NRC staff at your facility.

Should you have any questions or concerns regarding this matter, please feel free to contact me.

Sincerely, WM e H. Grier Director cc:
