MEMORANDUM FOR:

Roger Mattson, Director, DSS FROM:

Harold R. Denton, Director, NRR

SUBJECT:

ADDITIONS TO HYDROGEN BUBBLE CHRONOLOGY My recollection is that Chairman Her:drie was the first to call my attention to the possibility of combustion of the hydrogen within the reactor vessel.

Conversation took place by phone on Friday, March 30, sometime af ter I had arrived at the site.

I am fairly certain it occurred af ter I had been made aware of the pressure spike from hydrogen burning within the containment.

I recall that I first heard about the spike while in a car proceeding to the helicopter.

I was subsequently briefed of ten by Chairman Hendrie and by individuals in the IRC on oxygen evolution estimates and the flam-mability and detonation limits for hydrogen-oxygen mixtures. The estimates and limits varied with time throughout Saturday.

In my meeting with the Governor and in press conferences on Saturday night, I relied upon the most recent estimates obtained by phone from Chairman Hendrie prior to leaving the site for Harrisburg.

My concerns were onsiderably heightened by the AP story and I returned to the site to determine if our perception of tne situation had in fact changed and asked that plans be developed for the possi'oility that the bubble could not be removed in the next few days.
