Dear Mr. Carey:

PTam CParrish

SUBJECT:

REPLACEMENT FUEL ASSEMBLY FOR CYCLE 4 - BEAVER VALLEY UNIT I By letter dated September 1,1983, you submitted a revision to your Cycle 4 Reload Safety Evaluation Report. The revision involved the development of a new core loading pattern which was required due to the damage of the K-2 fuel assembly and rod cluster control assembly (RCCA) dur'ng fuel shuffle.

The new core loading pattern merely involves replacement of the fuel assembly at the K-2 position with the fuel assembly from the R-8 position. A new RCCA is also placed in location K-2 with the same neutron absorption proper-ties as the replaced RCCA. A new 3.1% enriched Region 6A fuel assembly will then be placed in the R-8 position.

You indicated that you have evaluated the new ctre loading pattern for Cycle 4 using the methodology described in WCAP-9273, " Westinghouse Reload Safety Evaluation Methodology", and have verified that the results and conclusion _

of the original Cycle 4 RSER, namely core peaking factors, power distributions and reload safety analyses checklist limits, arc still valid.

We agree with this conclusion and, therefore, our previous SER dated August 19, 1983 for the operation of Cycle 4 is still applicable.

This completes our effort on this action.
