'tr. James P. O'Reilly, Director Serial No. 7473 Office of Insoection & Enforcement PSELC/SCJ:aac:wano U. S. Nuclear Regulatory Cemission Reqion II Docket No. 50-?79 101 Marietta Street, Suite 3100 Atlanta, Georgia 30303
Dear 'tr. O'Reilly:
On Seotember 10, 1979, a recort was made under the orovisions of TOCFR50.5E(e) concerning the Emergency Diesel Generator Fan Cooling System.
During a review of equicment soecifications and the subsecuent analysis of local meteorological data, it was discovend that ambient tamoerature ranr;es exist which exceed the original design limits of tha Fan coling Syst2m. This necessitates that seasonal blade pitch angle changes te made.
To eliminate this time consuming crocedure, the manufacturer (.airbanks Morse) ergineered a modificaticr to the current f an drive shaf t coupling that will allcw the Emernercy Diesel Generator to coerate throughout the year at a fixed 51ade pitch angle witSout overloading toe fan drive shaft.
The a5cve modification has been ccioleted on North Anna Units 1 & 2 Emergency Dies 31 Generators and the units satisfactorily tested in accordance with the manuf acturer's recermlendations.
It is also necessary to make seasonal fluid coolint changes. A 35 percent solution of ethylene glycol will 59 used during the months when freezing could occur and treated water will be userf curino the sumer months for maximum cooling.
This letter is a fina! report on this subject.
If additional information is required for your review, clease notify us.
Very truly yours,
