TENNESSEE VALLEY AUTHORITY CH ATTANOOGA. TENNESSCE 37401 500C Chestnut Street Tower II Ah;-s al3 Mr. Victor Stello, Director Division of Operating Reactoit Of fice of Nuclear Reactor Regulat ion U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commissirn Washington, DC 20555
Dear Mr. Stello:
By my letter dated April 10, 1979, we informed you that stem-mounted limit switches on testable check valves in the core spray system at Browns Ferry units 1, 2, and 3 are of the same type referenced in IE Bulletin 79-01.
As stated in my April 10 letter, the only function of this switch is to provide remote position indication of the valve's rotary test actu.itor which is used to exercise the valve disk. This limit switch is not required to function to initiate or complete any ECCS function ner is it required to initiate or to maintain containment isolation. The failure modes of this limit switch will not affect ECCS operation, containment isolation, or cause any operator errors that might result in a loss of the above functions.
We believe the above should serve as the required 14-day followup report. The limit switch has no control or safety functions, and its operation is not required during a LOCA. Therefore, we have concluded that environmental qualification of the subject switches is not necessary.
Very truly gours,
?
