Dear Hr. Stello:
This report is in further response to James P. O'Reilly's letter to H.
G. Parris dated February 8, 1979, which enclosed IE Bulletin 79-01.
We have determined that stem-mounted limit switches on testable check valves in the core spray system at Browns Perry units 1, 2, and 3 are of the same type referenced in IE Bulletin 79-01.
The only function of this switch is to provide remote position indication of the valve's rotary test actuator which is used to exercise the valve disc.
A separate magnetic switch (which has been environmentally qualified) is used to indicate actUal valve disc position.
The limit switch has no control or safety functions and its operation is not required during a LOCA.
Therefore, the safe operation of the Browns Ferry units is not compromised in any way.
Supplemental information will be provided in the 14-day followup report.
Very truly yours, J.
