SPILL OF RADI0 ACTIVE MATERIAL On September 25, 1979, this iicensee was conducting tracer tests in an oil well in the Red Wash oil field in a remote area about 25 miles outside Vernal, Utah.

A total of 5 millicuries of cobalt-60 solution were being used.

During the injection, a coupling on connecting piping leaked, and an estimated one millicurie of D-60 solution leaked onto a concrete pad around the well head. Some of the m::arial flowed onto the ground.

The leak occurred inside a restricted area, and no cersonnel contamination gggurred.

The injection process was stopped. The area has been nintained as a restricted Contaminated earth has been removed, and contaminated liquids have been area.

Decontamination of the concrete pad is in progress.

No press release is planned by the licensee or by the NRC.

This preliminary notification is issued for information only.

The matter will be included in the next routine inspection, but no furthe-action by IE is anticipated.
