Subject:

Virgil C. Summer Nuclear Station Docket No. 50-395 Seismic Monitoring

Dear Mr. Denton:

This letter supplements information contained in my le ter of November 2, 1978, notifying you of a seismic event occurring on October 27, 1978, which was recorded by the seismic networks of the Applicant and the United States Geological Survey.

The October 27, 1978 seismic event was recorded by the Applicant's seismic network and was rated a Richter magnitude of approximately 2.8.

The epicenter of this earthquake has now been determined to be less than 1/4 mile from the USGS strong motion accelerometer which is located approx-imately one (1) mile northwest of the nuclear facility. The USGS has reviewed the data recorded by the strong motion accelerometer and has informed the Applicant that this event produced peak ground acceler tion values of.13g and.24g in the two horizontal directions and.17g 1. the vertical direction. The total time duration of ground motion exce ding

.10g was.3 second.

For completeness, I would also note that a second seismic event occurred on Oct ber 27, 1978 which had a value of 2.5 on the Richter scale. However, in as uch as your staff has indicated that seismic events of 2.5 Richter value. e less need not be reported except through routine reports, this pro-cedure is being followed in that case.

Both of these events re we within the seismic design parameters of the facility and are of ttle s gnificance.
