SERIAL: GD-79-3288 Mr. James P. O'Reilly, Director U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Region II 101 Marietta Street, Suite 3100 Atlanta, GA 30303 BRUNSWICK STEAM ELECTRIC PLANT, UNIT NOS.1 & 2 LICENSE NOS. DPR-71 AND DPR-62 DOCKET NOS. 50-325 AND 50-324 RESPONSE TO IE BULLETIN 79-26

Dear Mr. O'Reilly:

In response to your letter of November 20, 1979, transmitting IE Bulletin 79-26, Carolina Power & Light Company submits the following information:

1.

Brunswick Steam Electric Plant (BSEP) has values for cumulative control rod exposure stored in the TCREX array. This can easily be converted to percent B-10 depletion.

A procedure is currently being developed to monitor the segment exposures on a continuing basis.

A point not addressed by Item 1 is that the control rod segment with the maximum exposure must be monitored, not just the uppermost segment.

While the uppermost segment will usually bave the highest exposure, there are cases where segment 2 has a high exposure and thus a higher percent B-10 depletion.

2.

No rods at BSEP are near 34% B-10 depletion. The highest value of percent B-10 depletion for Unit No. 1 is 9.953% and for Unit No. 2, 13.171%.

3.

Item 3 will be addressed in a supplemental response within thirty days of each unit's start-up following the 1980 refueling outages.

4.

During these refueling outages, the most highly exposed control rod blade in each unit will be pulled and a destructive examination performed. A supplemental report on the results of these examinations will be provided within the time frame required in Item 5.
