Duke Power Company Catawba Nuclear Station Units 1 & 2 Report No: IE-79/05-SDD-413/414 Peoort Date: December 26, 1979 Facility: Catawba Nuclear Station, Units 1 & 2 Description of Deficiency:

The main steam power operated relief valves (PORV) in the doghouse areas cucside containment are not qualified for the expected environment resulting f rom a feedwater or steam line break. The main steam 00RV's are qualified for less extreme environnental condittens.

Analysis of Safety Imolications:

Worst case safety consequence consists of a secondary line break in a doghouse creating an accident environment which causes main steam PORV's to fail in the open position. This in turn causes both steam generators associated with main steam lines in the affected doghouse to depressurize.

Each main steam PORV is backed up by on electric noter operated block valve qualified for the expected feedwater or steam line break environment.

Corrective Actlon:

The main steam PCRV's will be qualified for the worst case steam line or feedwater line break environment. Accident environmental conditions will be defined after pipe break analyses for the doghouse areas are complete.
