Subject:
ONSITE SPILL OF SPENT RESIN About a pint of spent resin and 10 gallons of water were spilled onsite about 9:00 p.m., on June 12, 1979, when a hose failed during backflushing after it was used to fill a trailer-mounted shipping cask from the Spent Resin Storage Tank.
One individual was sprayed and had to shower for decontamination purposes; he was whole-body-counted afterwards and verified clean.
The spilled resin was surveyed at 2 R/hr at 6 in, before cleanup;2and 1 to 10 mr/hr remains on the paving now, as well as 4,000 dpm/100 cm on the trailer.
Further decontamination effort is planned.
Personnel received 70 mrem during decon work so far.
The activity is primarily Cs-134, Cs-137, Co-58, and Co-60.
There was no release to the environment.
Region I plans to conduct a followup inspection.
The State of New York has been informed.
News media are already covering the story.
