PRELIMINARY NGTIFICATION June 22, 1979 PRELIMINARY NOTIFICATION OF EVENT OR UNUSUAL OCCURRENCE--PNO-79-180 This preliminary notification constitutes EARLY notice of event of POSSIBLE safety or public interest significance.
The information presented is as initially received without verification or evaluation and is basically all that is known by IE staff on this date.

Subject:
UNSCHEDULED SHUTDOWN At 11:02 a.m., on 6/21/79, Unit 3 was shutdown from a turbine trip initiated when the condenser vacuum conditions were deteriorating apparently due to problems involving a recombiner mechanical compressor (off gas system).
The licensee is investigating the compressor problem. No unusual conditions regarding water level or effluents were observed by the Resident Inspector, who was present during the scram recovery. The unit is expected to be back on line during the evening of 6/21.
Media interest is expected because of.:nsitivity to nuclear plant issues.
The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania has been informed.
A press release is not planned by the licensee or NRC.

June 21, 1979.
