__ __ PRELIMINAR_Y N0 g CATION June 27, 1979 PRELIMINARY NOTIFICATION OF EVENT OR UNUSUAL OCCURRENCE--PNO-79-196 This preliminary notification constitutes EARLY notice of events of POSSIBLE safety or public interest significance.
The information presented is as initially received without verification or evaluation and is basically all that is known by IE staff on this date..
FACILITY: Georgia Power Company Hatch, Unit No. 2, docket No. 50-366' Baxley, Georgia
SUBJECT:
HIGH PRESSURE COOLANT INJECTION (HPCI) AND REACTOR CORE ISOLATION COOLING TRIP Following a planned Main Steam Isolation Valve (MSIV) closure startup test from 100% power, the HPCI turbine and the RCIC turbines automatically started and then tripped on apparent high steam flow to the turbines.
The reactor scram and response of other safety equipment performed as expected.
Two feedwater pumps operated normally.
The unit is being placed in cold shutdown to perform unrelated modifications pertaining to the drywell insulation which is expected to take two days.
Investigation of the turbine isolations is in progress.
Prior to restart the cause and corrective action taken to prevent recurrence of the two malfunctions will be reviewed by Region II.
There has been no media interest.
The licensee is considering a news release; A news release is not planned by the NRC if the licensee issues one.
The State of Georgia has been informed.
Region II (Atlanta) received notification of this occurrence by telephone from the Resident Inspector at 2:00 p.m. on June 27.
