Facility:

Iowa Electric Light and Power Company Duane Arnold Energy Center, Palo, Iowa (DN 50-331)

Subject:

REACTOR SCRAM ON TURBINE TRIP-REACTOR SHUTDOWN FOR GREATER THAN 48 HOURS The licensee telephoned RIII at 9:30 a.m., on July 18, 1979, to report that the reactor had scramed from 100% power at 8:04 a.m. on the same day.

The reactor scram resulted from a turbine trip which was caused by an exhaust hood high temperature.

Subsequent to the turbine trip a low low vater level spike occurred (normal evolution on a turbine trip from high power level).

The level transient resulted in a Group I isolation and initiation of HPCI and RCIC.

All safety related equipment performed as required in response to a Group I isolation transient.

The licensee has decided to keep the unit shutdown to effect repairs te some steam leaks in the heater bay and to make a drywell entry to complete to valve alignment check required by IE Bulletin No. 79-08.

Scheduled startup of the unit is the evening of July 21, 1979.

News media has shown interest and Iowa Electric has issued a press release.

The State of Iowa has been informed.

The above information is correct as of 2:00 p.m., July 18, 1979.
