This preliminary notification constitutes EARLY notice of events of POSSIBLE safety or public interest significance.
The information presented is as initially received without verification or evaluation and is basically all that is known by IE staf' on this date.

Subject:
CRANE FAILURE AT SAN ONOFRE UNIT 3 At approximately 8:00 a.m., 5eptember 12,1979, the 200-foot boom of a portable motorized 1. ink.,elt crane hit the top corner of the condensate storage tank building.
The boom collapsed and smashed the top of the refueling water storage tank, which wac being fabricated on the ground.
There were no personnel injuries as no one was in the immediate vicinity of the accident.
Cost of repair of the crane and replacement of the tank roof was estimated to be at least $250,000.
This1 accident should not significantly affect the construction completion schedule of either Unit 2 or Unit 3.
There has been significant media interest.
The licensee has issued a news release.
A news release by Region V is not planned.
The above information was received by Region V office in a telephone call from the licensee at 9:00 a.m. on September 12, 1979.
